5.8 Practice Quiz

Hey hey panthers!  We have a quiz tomorrow - our very first of the new unit on genetics.  The quiz will be on cell division (mitosis and meiosis).

Try out my new set of quizlet flashcards - the top 3 high scorers on the scatter game get +2% on their quiz grade.

Here is a practice quiz that looks just like the real one!   The answer key is below.

1. d (There should be four haploid cells, though, not just 2)
2. b (Mitosis is the process used to make more body cells for growth and repair)
3. c (Though this is wrong - human body cells have 23 pairs of chromosomes, 46 total)
4. a (Part of meiosis is crossing over, which makes new combinations of DNA, and mutation changes DNA, so you get more sets of different DNA with meiosis and many mutations).
5.  c (Mitosis is the type of cell division that allows cancer to spread)
6. a (Chromosomes are copied.. though the grammar of this question is poor).
7. d (In meiosis, you start with a parent cell with a complete set of chromosomes and end with 4 cells with a half set of chromosomes)
8. c (In mitosis, you start with a parent cell with a complete set of chromosomes and end with 2 cells with a complete set of chromosomes.. meaning the same number of chromosomes.)
9. c (The purpose of meiosis is to make sex cells (gametes), and recombination (crossing over of chromosomes) is part of this process.  It allows new combinations of DNA to exist)
10. d (The trading of genes is called crossing over and it happens during meiosis)
11. a (Mitosis is the process that allows cells to grow in the body.  Meiosis is only for making gametes - sperm and eggs in humans)
12. All answer choices are wrong - the muscle, bone, and nerve cells are products of mitosis.

Exemplary CER (proficient!)

Claim: The genetic content of the new epithelial cells is the same as the content of the old epithelial cells.

Evidence:  The text says that the cells are multiplying to repair the skin.  Mitosis is the cell division process that is responsible for growth and repair in the body.  In mitosis, one cell with 23 pairs of chromosomes divides to make 2 cells with 23 pairs of chromosomes.

Reasoning:  Because the epithelial cells must divide to repair the skin in this case, mitosis is the process that is being used.  Because mitosis makes daughter cells with the same genetic content (or number of chromosomes) as the parent cells, we know that the new cells must have the same genetic content as the old cells that made them.  This is why the new cells have the same genetic content as the old cells.

5.7 CER Practice Day

Our CER scores from the Unit 4 Quizzes and Tests are improving! The average score for claim is 2.7. The average score for evidence is 1.9, and the average score for reasoning is 1.5. The next step in improving these scores is to focus on reasoning.

Review the attached CER example packet and evaluate which of the two CERs from the quizzes and tests are the best and why. On the last page, you will write a reasoning paragraph for the Meiosis and Mitosis CER.

5.6 Cell Division Applicataions

We applied our knowledge about mitosis and meiosis to real world application in class today. Each member of your family read a different article about either mitosis or meiosis. After reading and annotating, you were able to discuss in groups the meaning of the article.

Work Due: Create a "poster" on a piece of copy paper about your article so that you can share with your family groups. To make up this work, choose one of the three articles below to create a poster.

Articles:
Cancer and Cell Division
What Causes Down Syndrome?
Human Egg Cells Article

Power Point

For help on annotations and visuals, below is a copy of some of the annotated articles we did in class. Make sure you are making your own annotations on YOUR article, but feel free to use the below document as a guide.

5.5 Meiosis

Meiosis is another type of cell division that results in haploid gametes. In order to better understand this, we modeled this as an activity in class.

5.4 Mitosis Lab

Hi all!  You can find the 5.4 mitosis lab document here.

Please use this image to collect data:

Oh, and I took this image from Ms. McGurr's webpage, which has some great resources on mitosis that might help you better understand mitosis.

5.2 "The Changing Face of America" Article Discussion

In class, we annotated and discussed the article from National Geographic called "The Changing Face of America."

Through the article, we connected genetics to the idea of skin color. But race is seen more of a social construct than biologically connected. Please see Mr. Trainer or Ms. Barnes for questions!

Work Due: Annotate the article and complete the above discussion questions. You MUST get thoughts from your family for the front page.

4.19 Unit 4 Test study resources

The Unit 4 test is coming up!  Here are some resources to help you study.

Here are my flashcards that I made for myself: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B9gJuG8LlES1SjVWYWZiaEtvclU/view?usp=sharing

Here is a set of quizlet flashcards for unit 4:  https://quizlet.com/_1zlsi0

Here is a written review of all topics from unit 4: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B9gJuG8LlES1dUxOMlR6U0xGTTg/view?usp=sharing

One more thing - I know I keep pushing flashcards, but I feel like I am explaining this in a way you don't get.  Check out this video on how to make and use flashcards to study:  http://www.howcast.com/videos/421416-how-to-make-effective-flash-cards/

4.18 Practice Test

In preparation for the upcoming unit 4 test on Wednesday, we completed a practice test in class today. Below is a blank copy of the test, as well as the answer key!

4.15 Quiz Debrief

Today was a day of rest after the day of snow day rest... We took the time to go over the quiz results from Monday, and everyone was given time to reflect on their current knowledge about DNA. We have the Unit test coming up next Wednesday, February 10th! Understand what you need to work on now, so that you can be successful on the test!

After reflecting on the quiz, everyone was then given the opportunity to turn in missing work or incomplete work based on their overall grade report in Biology.

4.14 Quiz 4.2

Today was the second quiz for the DNA unit. This will better help you assess what you need to work on for the upcoming test next Wednesday!
