5.21 Project Day 3

Using our 3 articles, we completed the note catcher that will organize our evidence for tomorrow's outline. Please see the previous post to see the materials.

For the note catcher:
  • Make sure you have the title of the article and the MLA citation for each. For example, the citation for the first article would be ("Scientists discover mystery..." page #)
  • The main idea is 1-2 sentences summarizing what the article is about.
  • Choose three quotes, paraphrases, or specific data from the article to put as your Specific Points. These can be used as your evidence in your CER!
Please email me with absolutely any questions!

5.19 Introduction to Project

Before debriefing the quiz from last Friday, we introduced our topic for this week: Genes and the Environment. We will be learning about how obesity is affected by genetics and affected by the environment though scientific articles. Over the course of the week, you will develop your personal thoughts on the subject in a six paragraph CER essay, due by Monday, March 21st. Most of class time will be structured around working on this project. Below is the rubric and link to the first article.

5.16 Genetics Counseling

After becoming experts in understanding punnett squares the last couple of days, we acted as genetics counselors during class that used punnett squares and pedigrees to counsel couples to what various genotypes and phenotypes their children will have. We start out with physical traits, and move to a more serious clients that want to know if their children will have certain heritable diseases.

Work Due: Complete the packet below, including the CER on the final question (about 4-5 sentences).

5.15 Extended Punnett Squares

We continues using punnett squares to make predictions on offspring using physical characteristics and heritable diseases. We practiced with punnett squares with a packet of information. Given information about the parents OR the offspring, we could predict what the genotypes and phenotypes would be of each respectively.

Work Due: Complete the below packet.

5.14 Introduction to Punnet Squares

Today we reviewed and expanded on Punnett Squares, a tool used in predicting characteristics of offspring. There was a lot of new vocabulary introduced, and a labeled diagram like the one you see below will be provided to you during the quiz on Friday about genetics!

Work Due: Complete a copy of cornell notes or notes on a notebook paper following the questions on the power point. Please see Ms. Barnes during lunch or after school for help!
